  • The S-1 was filed for the first time on October 16, 2025 but not made effective.
  • No ETF shares were issued or sold and VanEck did not provide reasons for dropping the stETH cryptocurrency.

VanEck has officially put on the brakes on a long-anticipated U.S. exchange-traded fund (ETF) pegged to Lido staked Ether, concluding months of speculation in the cryptocurrency sector.

The asset manager filed a withdrawal request with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 14, 2026, confirming that it no longer intends to distribute shares of the proposed fund.

VanEck Withdraws Lido Staked Ethereum ETF Filing

VanEck Digital Assets filed a Form RW with the SEC that sought to withdraw the registration statement for the VanEck Lido Staked Ethereum ETF. The original Form S-1 was filed on October 16, 2025 under registration file number 333-290918 and was later amended.

VanEck indicated in a new filing that it withdrew its plans because the sponsor plans to not enter into the distribution of units of the trust.

The company didn’t specify what prompted the decision, which could have been due to regulatory concerns, market conditions, product strategy or something else.

No Shares Were Ever Issued

VanEck confirmed that it did not make the registration statement effective. It also stated that there was no distribution of any securities or a preliminary prospectus for the registration statement. That implies that the withdrawal ends the filing process prior to such product coming to the investors.

The new ETF was intended to sit at a stake position which is Lido’s own liquid staker protocol’s version of Ether, stETH, providing a secondary exposure to deposited ETH.

As a result of stETH being staked ETH and showing the accumulated staking rewards, the product offered was not exactly a traditional spot Ether ETF holding a position in ETH.

stETH ETF Plan Ends Without Replacement

VanEck didn’t state a successor fund or disclose if it plans to develop another Ethereum product focused on staking. The filing only states that the sponsor no longer plans to move forward with the existing trust. That leaves the prospects of VanEck’s Ethereum bet hanging in the balance.

Staking-based crypto ETFs have achieved attention due to their potential price exposure along with staking returns, whilst including more complexities upon the custody, rewards, liquidity and regulatory treatment.

Withdrawal Narrows VanEck’s Ethereum ETF Push

Another theme in the cancelled filing is the difference between traditional spot Ethereum exposure and investments over liquid staking tokens.

A stETH-based vehicle would have added another layer between investors and ETH itself, as stETH would be a claim relative to our staked ETH through Lido. But for now, VanEck has cut the route off.

The investors will not be able to access the planned Lido Staked Ethereum ETF via the structure originally proposed in the October 2025 edition.
