Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin updated parts of the network’s roadmap amid scalability concerns and growing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. Some areas like security and quantum safety will receive closer attention, while others were pushed a couple of steps down.
Ethereum Is Bracing For Post-Quantum Era
Ethereum developers are looking to scale certain areas as digital assets face new hurdles ranging from security to privacy concerns. The network’s co-founder announced an update to the 2023 roadmap, now temporarily sitting in the ‘strawmap.’
The new focus will center on quantum resistance, privacy, and AI assistance, giving users a better experience and devs a more robust framework. Blockchain security remains a major concern in recent months growing hacks wiping out billions from the market.
For many researchers, the next big hurdle is the post-quantum era when supercomputers will break digital assets’ cryptography. This urgency has grown after recent reports that the deadline is within three years.
According to Buteirn, Ethereum will be quantum-safe, with priority given to other security measures while ensuring privacy. These measures can be implemented while keeping it lean, scalable, and censorship-resistant.
In January, he urged devs to adopt quantum-safe cryptography, leading the Ethereum Foundation to roll out a dedicated team. The same structure was also present in his “Lean Ethereum” proposal on quantum safety last month.
As the race to build a resistant network intensifies, several analysts believe Ethereum is better positioned to handle Q-Day than Bitcoin. The latter struggled with a unified roadmap, especially dealing with dormant coins not moved in over ten years. The Google researchers’ report rattled crypto holders with the potential risk.
“First-class attention to strong privacy. This covers: keyed nonces and recent roots, aspects of FOCIL, lean privacy pool & wormholes * Aggressive scaling in the context of post-quantum. This covers: leanSPHINCS signatures and aggregation, zkzk frames *Lean-ification of the spec, to assist in formal verification (full FV of everything is only possible because of modern AI),” he added.
Ethereum has struggled in recent months largely due to macro factors and the wider crypto sideways pattern. The largest altcoin by market capitalization still trades below $1,900 but spiked in August, posting monthly gains above 4%.
A quantum-safe Ethereum, with all proposals implemented, could attract more institutional investors and take the asset out of the red zone.
