Wallet-Connect Play and What It Changes

What connecting actually does

Connecting shares your public address with the site and gives it the ability to ask your
wallet to sign things. That is all. The site cannot move funds because it has been connected,
and disconnecting is a local action that revokes nothing on chain, because nothing was granted on chain.

What can move funds is an approval: a transaction you confirm that authorises a contract to
spend a token on your behalf, usually without an expiry and often without a limit. Approvals
are the actual risk surface, and they are confirmed in a dialogue that looks much like the
harmless one.

Connecting

  • Shares your address
  • Allows signature requests
  • Moves nothing by itself
  • Revoked locally, instantly

Approving

  • Authorises a contract to spend
  • Frequently unlimited by default
  • Persists until revoked on chain
  • Usable later, at a time you do not choose

Two custody models wearing the same interface

Some operators credit an internal balance when you deposit, exactly like a conventional
casino, with the wallet acting only as the payment rail. Others keep funds in your wallet and
settle each round on chain. Both present a connect button, and the difference decides what
happens if the site vanishes overnight.

Genuine on-chain play is rarer than the category’s marketing implies, because settling every
spin on a public network is slow and expensive. Most of what is described as wallet-based play
is a conventional balance with a nicer deposit flow, which is fine, but worth knowing rather than assuming.

The wallet to use

A dedicated one, funded with what you intend to play and nothing else. This costs a few
minutes to set up and removes the entire class of failure where a stale approval reaches a
holding you forgot was in the same wallet. It also makes the on-chain history of that address
trivially separable from the rest of your activity.

Reviewing outstanding approvals occasionally is the other half. An approval granted to a
contract that is later compromised is a live permission, and the interval between granting and
exploitation has in some cases been years.

Read what the dialogue says

Wallet software shows what you are agreeing to, and the difference between a signature
request and a spending approval is stated in it. Almost every loss in this category
follows from confirming that dialogue at speed, on a site reached from a link, with a
wallet holding more than the session required.

There is also a practical reason to keep the connecting wallet separate from a main one, beyond
the general advice above. A site you connect to can read the full balance and transaction
history of whatever address you present, before any deposit happens and whether or not you go
on to play. That is not an attack; it is how the connection works. A wallet holding only what
you intend to gamble discloses only that.

Why the category is smaller than it looks

Wallet-connect entry is advertised widely and implemented properly by comparatively few
operators. The common version is a conventional account with a wallet-shaped deposit button,
which is a perfectly reasonable product and not the thing the marketing describes. Checking
which one you are in takes a single question: after a deposit, does the balance live in your
wallet or in their ledger?

The answer changes what happens on a bad day. An internal balance behaves like any casino
account and depends on the operator honouring it. Funds that remain in your wallet between
rounds do not, and that difference is the entire reason to prefer one model over the other.
