WEMIX faces major security test after $6.25M smart contract breach

WEMIX, a blockchain ecosystem, reported a major smart contract compromise on the 26th of July, after an attacker obtained owner privileges.

The attacker then minted and transferred approximately $6.25 million worth of WEMIX tokens, raising immediate concerns about protocol security. Furthermore, the breach exposed weaknesses in privileged contract access rather than in ordinary user wallets.

That discovery increased scrutiny of the project’s internal security controls. Meanwhile, the team identified the affected addresses and began working with exchanges and blockchain security firms to trace the funds.

The investigation remains active, and new findings may emerge. Ultimately, WEMIX must contain the breach quickly, strengthen contract security, and restore investor confidence through transparent updates.

On-chain transfers reveal the attack flow

The attacker quickly shifted from contract exploitation to dispersing the stolen assets, increasing the challenge of fund recovery. After minting 5.23 million WEMIX$, the attacker converted the tokens into 30,736 WEMIX and 724,198.27 USDC.e.

The funds then moved through Ethereum [ETH] and BNB Chain before reaching ETH, Tether [USDT], and other assets. That sequence reduced direct traceability and increased the risk of broader distribution across multiple platforms.

Meanwhile, WEMIX traced the attacker’s wallets and secured cooperation from exchanges, with several already freezing linked addresses. Those measures could slow additional transfers.

Nevertheless, each successful cross-chain transfer further reduces the chances of recovery.

Can containment restore confidence?

WEMIX then focused on limiting the potential for further losses in the ecosystem by tracking the location of the missing funds.

The team immediately disabled all active WEMIX3.0 Bridge functionality, disarmed select liquidity pools, and halted operation of other relevant functions to prevent future funds from being transferred. This enabled investigators to obtain additional time to follow the chain of transaction history and communicate directly with exchange operators who froze identified attacker-address accounts associated with stolen assets.

Still, investigators continue reviewing related contracts to uncover the attack path and close remaining security gaps. Technical safeguards may contain the immediate threat. However, restoring confidence will require transparent communication, stronger security controls, and sustained ecosystem stability over time.
