As the first commercial layer-2 blockchain network to broadcast EIP-7928 block access lists within each flashblock, World Chain today announced the release of complete block access lists. The breakthrough, which will launch on the World Chain Mainnet on August 17, is intended to solve one of the main scaling issues with blockchain technology: boosting transaction throughput without having validators to operate ever-more-powerful hardware.

There is a trade-off between decentralization and performance because as blockchain networks handle more transactions, validators usually need more processing capacity to validate each block. Validators may check blocks in parallel as they are being built thanks to World Chain’s architecture, which allows the network to aim for throughput of up to one gigagas per second while essentially maintaining validator hardware requirements.

Before verifying a block’s authenticity, validators have historically had to re-execute each transaction in turn. Instead, independent transactions may be validated concurrently over many CPU cores rather than one at a time thanks to full block access lists, which provide a record of the blockchain state each transaction reads and writes.

By using its flashblock architecture to broadcast access list data gradually every 200 milliseconds, World Chain expands upon the EIP-7928 protocol. In order to reduce validation latency and distribute verification effort across the block-building process, validators start validating transactions as soon as the block is built rather than waiting until the complete block has been created.

World Chain is currently implementing complete block access lists via a runtime flag rather than a hard fork, in contrast to Ethereum’s intended implementation of EIP-7928 as part of the next Glamsterdam update. Internal evaluation on World Chain test networks revealed that, even with a substantial increase in throughput—up to one gigagas per second utilizing normal cloud infrastructure—validation latency remained essentially unchanged. The findings imply that blockchain networks may significantly boost throughput without correspondingly raising the amount of processing power needed to independently verify the chain.

The distribution adds to Ethereum’s larger scaling plan and is the first operational implementation of streaming EIP-7928 block access lists.
