What to know:

  • XRP Ledger surpasses 1 million AI agent payments, marking a major milestone for autonomous blockchain-based transactions.
  • Ripple launched the XRPL AI Starter Kit, enabling AI agents to use XRP and RLUSD for automated blockchain payments.
  • XRPL processes x402 payments in 3–5 seconds, allowing AI agents to confirm transactions and continue tasks without delays.

XRP Ledger (XRPL) has completed more than 1 million agentic transactions, signaling yet another development in the deployment of AI software in blockchain transactions.

This particular achievement, as stated by J. Ayo Akinyele, RippleX’s engineering head, signals increasing interest in AI software capable of sending payments and accessing digital services without human intervention for each transaction.

Akinyele suggests that the present state of agentic payments resembles the initial stages of cloud computing, where there was great promise for the technology, yet its tools and methods were not well defined. He argues that AI systems would require a payment system that is as efficient and fast as the way AI systems exchange data.

“Since AI agents are becoming increasingly sophisticated, they require a payment network which is as seamless as how they exchange information,” Akinyele noted, while highlighting that the XRP ledger system was created specifically for such automatic payments.

Ripple Expands AI Payments With XRP Ledger

As a way to facilitate this expanding industry, Ripple has announced the XRPL AI Starter Kit, which enables developers to hook up AI agents to blockchain wallets and payment capabilities. This includes support for the XRP crypto and the RLUSD stablecoin by Ripple, pegged to the US dollar.

One such key feature includes support for x402, an open payment protocol using the existing Internet protocol response code “402 Payment Required.” In addition, Ripple has partnered with the x402 Foundation, a Linux Foundation initiative to develop standard payment systems for AI agents, APIs, and Web apps.

With the help of x402, the online service will be able to give the payment instruction to an AI agent. This agent can then perform the payment from XRP Ledger, get the confirmation, and move on with its request without opening an account or using any cards.

Akinyele noted that one million transactions are a significant accomplishment but stated that this is only the start of AI-powered payments.

XRP Ledger Enables Fast AI Transactions

XRP Ledger verifies x402 transactions in approximately 3-5 seconds, which enables the agents using AI technology to easily check their successful transactions before proceeding to another activity. Such quick verification is critical for automated systems that require transaction success in order to acquire digital services.

There is also the monitoring solution that Ripple has provided for separating the activities of the AI agent from those of humans, and analyzing and observing any strange activities. This could become very important in the future, especially when the AI is allowed to subscribe or purchase anything.

Apart from that, Ripple continues to expand into the field of enterprise. The company is involved in Mastercard’s AI payments project that focuses on the way autonomous software can be used to pay invoices, buy compute power, and perform other machine-to-machine tasks.
