What to know:
- Ripple XRPL AI Starter Kit has been unveiled by Ripple, enabling autonomous AI transactions on the XRP Ledger platform.
- Meanwhile, Robinhood and MetaMask develop AI finance tools as IC3 casts doubts about the full autonomy of agents.
- Ripple integrates X402 protocol payments using XRP and RLUSD for machine-to-machine blockchain transactions.

Ripple has launched a developer toolkit for building agentic payment applications on the XRP Ledger, enabling AI-driven systems to execute transactions autonomously. As a result, Ripple targets growing needs for automated financial infrastructure, which is capable of automating financial processes like payments and management of invoices without continuous human interaction.
AI agents already perform financial activities such as payment for compute capacity, invoice settlements, and other transactions without human intervention, according to Ripple. Thus, Ripple sees the growing trend towards automation and machine-based financial interactions in today’s world of blockchain technology development.

Growing Ecosystem of AI-Driven Payment Infrastructure on XRP Ledger
Robinhood trading application recently introduced the possibility to experiment with AI agents capable of trading equities. MetaMask developed a special wallet for AI agents, which allows them to interact with blockchain applications and manage crypto assets automatically without any human interaction.
As Ripple pointed out, traditional payment rails were built for human approval purposes, whereas autonomous systems are required to operate with a predictable speed of transaction finality. XRP Ledger architecture was specially designed to enable fast transactions with real-time finality for such systems as well as a global payments infrastructure.
Debate Over Autonomy and Blockchain-Based Agents
Researchers from IC3, a consortium of leading universities, challenged the narrative that artificial intelligence combined with blockchain technology enables fully autonomous, anonymous agents operating independently. They argued that while AI agents can automate transactions through wallet access, they remain dependent on human oversight, regulatory frameworks, and underlying infrastructure limitations and constraints.
Thus, despite the fact that AI agents may automate transactions through access to wallets, they still depend on human oversight, the existing legal framework, and infrastructural issues. Ripple confirmed its AI starter kit will be able to support x402 protocol payments using XRP and Ripple USD RLUSD.
According to Ripple, the x402 protocol is an open internet-based payment protocol that enables automated machine-to-machine transactions via HTTP-based infrastructure.
Thus, the company aims to take its position in the area of agentic payments, which requires infrastructure enabling financial operations without human approval.
