The New York Yankees recently reshaped an international scouting operation that underwent a significant leadership change following some high-profile miscues.
The organization appointed an internal candidate as their new lead for the department in January after moving on from a longtime director who had failed to meet expectations, immediately costing the Yankees one of the most coveted players on the market.
“Mario Garza has been named the club’s new director of international scouting … replacing longtime head Donny Rowland after he was let go earlier this offseason,” Greg Joyce reported for the New York Post. “After dismissing Rowland following 15 years on the job, the Yankees lost out on one of the top prospects in the current signing class, shortstop Wandy Asigen, who backed out of his agreement and instead signed with the (New York) Mets.”
But now, with a new director of international scouting in place, the organization has another opportunity to land the kind of young talent that could eventually become a major league contributor.
New York Yankees, St Louis Cardinals Among Teams Tracking Promising Cuban Slugger
The recent high-profile shakeup makes the Yankees’ involvement in the market for one of the more intriguing remaining international free agents worth watching.
New York has historically been aggressive in Latin America, and its revamped scouting department could be looking for another opportunity to add a high-upside player, as the team has been linked to 20-year-old Cuban outfielder Raider Sanchez, who is also receiving interest from the St. Louis Cardinals, among other organizations.
“Cuban OF Raider Sanchez will have a second showcase,” international baseball reporter Francys Romero noted on X. “Several franchises, including the Yankees, Rangers, Cardinals, Blue Jays and Padres, have shown interest in the 20-year-old free-agent slugger.”
The second showcase could be particularly important as teams continue evaluating a player whose age and power potential make him an unusual free-agent target. Sanchez is older than the teenagers who typically dominate the international amateur market, but that also means clubs can evaluate him against a more mature baseball background.
New York Yankees’ Scouting Shakeup Adds Intrigue
As Romero noted, the Yankees and Cardinals aren’t the only organizations with their eyes on the promising slugger. According to another report, the San Diego Padres could be the team to watch in the sweepstakes.
“The New York Yankees and San Diego Padres are among a few organizations to watch in the Sanchez sweepstakes,” Conor Liguori wrote for World Baseball Network. “New York is always an aggressor in the Latin American market, and the Padres recently acquired $500,000 in international bonus pool money in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.”
Sanchez’s second showcase gives the Yankees, Cardinals and other interested teams another chance to evaluate the young slugger before the bidding becomes more serious.
For New York, the pursuit also represents an early test of its revamped international scouting operation and an opportunity to add another intriguing piece to its long-term talent pipeline.
