Electric Coin Company CEO Zooko Wilcox, the key figure in the company responsible for the development of Zcash (ZEC), officially announced a development roadmap through 2027 that could become a turning point not only for ZEC, but for cryptography as a whole.

While competitors, including those from the Bitcoin camp, are still only discussing the risks associated with the emergence of powerful quantum computers, the ECC team is already planning to launch Quantum-Recoverable Wallets within the next 30 days.

The solution is intermediate, but critically important, according to Wilcox. The new wallets will allow users to protect their assets before post-quantum algorithms are implemented at the protocol level.

This is necessary so that, in the event of a sudden “quantum leap”, when breaking existing signature algorithms such as ECDSA becomes possible, holders of such wallets will be able to safely migrate their funds into a new protected environment.

How Zcash aims to dethrone Visa and Mastercard as private global settlement layer

An even more ambitious goal for Zcash is to become fully post-quantum secure within 12 to 18 months, which would mean replacing the current zero-knowledge proof system (zk-SNARKs) with new primitives resistant to attacks from quantum processors. By mid-2027, the project plans to eliminate the vulnerability of private ZEC transactions to future supercomputers.

Alongside quantum security, Zcash is also solving the “bottleneck” problem in its current architecture, which is expected to bring the network’s throughput to the level of global payment giants. This is a direct signal to the market: Zcash no longer wants to be a “niche anonymity asset”, but a primary settlement layer for global business, similar to Mastercard or Visa, but where not only speed matters, but also commercial confidentiality.

The fundamental developments have coincided with a powerful speculative backdrop as over the past week, ZEC has gained more than 70%, stabilizing around the $570 level.

Key reasons behind the growing interest in Zcash:

  • Concerns over AI-driven transaction deanonymization
  • Rising demand for privacy-focused infrastructure
  • Fear of excessive financial surveillance
  • Interest in quantum-resistant crypto systems

If Zcash becomes the first cryptocurrency to implement functional quantum-resistant solutions, it could take the title of the most technologically advanced privacy-focused asset from Monero and even challenge Bitcoin in the portfolios of privacy-conscious investors.
