Crypto accounted for more than half of the losses reported through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and increased nearly 22% from 2024. The federation applied a 7.1-times multiplier to reported figures, based on earlier federal victimization data, making the $80.7 billion total an extrapolated estimate rather than a direct count of verified cases.
Across all online scams and crimes, the organization estimated $148.2 billion in U.S. losses, up 25.8% year over year and averaging $1,009 per household. The next test is whether updated reporting and enforcement data narrow that gap, because crypto’s estimated share now places digital-asset fraud at the center of the broader scam economy.
