OpenAI’s ChatGPT now integrates with Epic EHR and public health datasets, offering clinicians AI-driven insights and HIPAA-compliant tools.

ChatGPT Integrates Epic EHR with Public Health Data Access

OpenAI has introduced a significant upgrade to its healthcare-focused AI offerings by integrating ChatGPT with Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) system and a new Healthcare Public Data plugin. This marks a leap forward in how clinicians can securely access and utilize patient data alongside trusted healthcare datasets like PubMed and DailyMed.

The integration allows healthcare providers to ask targeted questions about patient histories, lab results, and medication changes directly within ChatGPT. For example, a clinician might query, “What key changes have occurred since this patient’s last visit?” or “What recent lab results should I review before today’s appointment?” The AI then synthesizes the data, summarizes key details, and points back to the original records within the Epic system. However, it’s worth noting that the integration is read-only, meaning ChatGPT can access and analyze data but cannot write back into the EHR, ensuring an additional layer of safety and compliance.

Beyond EHR data, the Healthcare Public Data plugin connects ChatGPT to nine official healthcare sources, including ClinicalTrials.gov and CMS Coverage. These datasets allow clinicians, researchers, and administrative teams to access structured, verified information for tasks like evaluating clinical trial eligibility, confirming drug labels, and analyzing Medicare coverage policies – all without needing to manually search disparate systems.

HIPAA-Compliant AI for Healthcare

This rollout builds on OpenAI’s earlier move to support HIPAA-compliant enterprise deployments. ChatGPT for Healthcare offers role-based access controls, audit logs, and Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) for eligible clients, ensuring compliance with U.S. healthcare privacy laws. Importantly, while consumer-facing ChatGPT Health allows individual users to connect personal medical records, these enterprise-grade tools are designed specifically for healthcare organizations with stringent data governance needs.

For clinicians, this integration addresses a long-standing challenge: the fragmentation of healthcare data across multiple systems. By consolidating patient context, clinical research, and public health data into a unified AI-driven interface, ChatGPT has the potential to reduce time spent on administrative tasks, enabling providers to focus more on direct patient care. UCSF Health CEO Suresh Gunasekaran, a pilot partner for the new Epic integration, emphasized, “The technology has the potential to reduce time spent synthesizing data and give clinicians more time with patients.”

Evaluation and Real-World Testing

OpenAI has partnered with hundreds of physicians globally to evaluate ChatGPT’s performance in healthcare scenarios. In a recent study, over 4,300 clinical responses generated by ChatGPT were reviewed, with 99.1% rated as “safe.” When tested on nuanced healthcare queries using large datasets, more than 93% of responses were rated as having “good” or better accuracy. This rigorous evaluation underpins OpenAI’s claim that its model can provide reliable and actionable insights in real-world clinical settings.

Next Steps for Adoption

Healthcare organizations ready to adopt ChatGPT for Healthcare can now enable the EHR integration and data plugins through their administrators. Eligible customers can also leverage ChatGPT Work and Codex to generate reports, build software, and streamline operations – all within a HIPAA-compliant framework.

For clinicians and researchers, this development signals a broader trend of AI becoming deeply integrated into day-to-day healthcare workflows. With OpenAI’s continued investment in healthcare-specific tools and rigorous testing, the potential for AI to improve patient outcomes while reducing administrative burdens is becoming increasingly tangible.
