The drain affected 1,404 accounts. Qubic’s network remained halted on 19 October while its Computor validator quorum considered how to recover the funds; no restart date had been announced, according to Cointelegraph.
Qubic reported that 87.1% of the stolen QU remained immobilized on-chain, while the remaining 12.9% was sent to MEXC, which froze the receiving account, according to a QubicMap community incident notice citing Qubic Core.
Computors halt Qubic at tick 85,371,949
Computors halted Qubic’s network at tick 85,371,949, and it remained offline as the validator quorum considered recovery options. Qubic reported that 87.1% of the affected tokens remained immobilized on-chain, while the portion transferred to MEXC was subject to an exchange freeze. Qubic had not specified how the affected wallet funds would be recovered or when normal network operations would resume.
Drain affected 1,404 wallets in under two hours
The attacker drained approximately 2.94 trillion QU from 1,404 Qubic wallets between 23:42 UTC on 17 October and 01:26 UTC on 18 October. The timeline amounts to less than two hours, based on Qubic’s incident disclosure reproduced by ETHNews.
The scale of the drain prompted the chain-wide intervention rather than a response limited to individual accounts. With the network halted, the recovery decision now sits with the Computor quorum.
Seed-generation weakness, not a protocol flaw
Qubic attributed the incident to insufficient randomness in wallet-seed generation affecting certain Apple-device and browser combinations, rather than a flaw in the Qubic protocol. Its wallet repository says version 4.26.4 replaced the vulnerable seed-generation method.
The disclosure identifies the wallet environment as the affected component, while the unresolved recovery process concerns tokens already drained from the 1,404 wallets. Qubic had not announced a restart date as of 19 October.
