TLDR

  • Stablecoins are growing as businesses adopt blockchain payments.
  • Real-world asset tokenization is drawing interest from traditional financial institutions.
  • Decentralized finance is moving toward institutional lending products.
  • AI and decentralized computing could create new demand for blockchain networks.
  • Layer-2 scaling remains a priority as blockchain use expands.

Investors are paying more attention to crypto projects that have practical uses beyond trading. Bitcoin and Ethereum remain central to the market.

Five sectors could influence where money flows next. They are stablecoins, tokenized assets, decentralized finance, AI computing and layer-2 networks.

Stablecoins and Blockchain Payments

Stablecoins are tokens built to hold a steady value against the US dollar. Businesses use them for faster settlement and cheaper international transfers.

According to Visa, more than 160 stablecoin-linked card programs were operating worldwide in 2026. Stablecoin settlement volume also passed a $20 billion annualized run rate.

Circle announced plans in October to expand into about 40 more markets. Blockchain networks are now competing to handle everyday payments.

Real-World Asset Tokenization

Tokenization turns traditional assets, such as government bonds, stocks and property, into blockchain-based tokens. Supporters say it could cut settlement costs and open markets to more people.

Data from RWA.xyz shows about $38.6 billion in real-world assets had been tokenized by October 1, 2026. That figure does not include stablecoins.

Major financial institutions are exploring tokenized securities and investment products. The International Monetary Fund has warned that these markets still face issues with liquidity, legal certainty and financial stability.

Decentralized Finance and On-Chain Lending

Decentralized finance lets users borrow, lend and trade digital assets without a traditional bank. Apps run on blockchain code instead.

Platforms such as Aave and Morpho are building more advanced lending markets. Institutional investors are also looking at managed DeFi vaults.

These products can earn returns through lending and liquidity strategies. Risks include smart contract failures, leverage and sudden liquidations.

Artificial Intelligence and Decentralized Computing

Crypto developers are targeting the rising demand for computing power. Projects such as Render, Akash Network and Bittensor use different approaches to GPU markets and machine intelligence.

Akash reported more than $5 million in cumulative computing spending in the first quarter of 2026. That points to early commercial activity.

Competition from large cloud providers remains strong. Higher AI demand does not automatically lift token prices.

Layer-2 Scaling and Blockchain Infrastructure

Blockchains need to be faster, cheaper and easier to use for mainstream finance. Ethereum layer-2 networks such as Arbitrum, Optimism and Base aim to do that while relying on Ethereum for security.

The Ethereum Foundation has named scaling, interoperability and user experience as priorities for 2026. Better performance could draw more developers building payment and consumer apps.

Latest Report on Lending Vaults

Stablecoins and tokenized assets currently show some of the clearest signs of adoption. AI computing has a less proven business model.

On October 19, the Financial Times reported that more than $10 billion had flowed into crypto lending vaults. The report raised concerns about leverage, complex strategies and possible market instability.
