Thirty-nine U.S. state bankers associations announced the formation of the BankChain Alliance on Aug. 25, establishing an industry-owned and industry-governed blockchain network for banks. The alliance is targeting a 2027 launch, but it has yet to select the technology partner that would support the network.

The announcement puts state banking groups behind a shared network initiative rather than a project identified with a single bank or technology provider. At this stage, the public plan sets out a target and intended applications, while the core technology selection remains unresolved.

BankChain Alliance forms with 39 state bankers associations

BankChain Alliance was announced by 39 U.S. state bankers associations as an industry-owned and industry-governed blockchain network for banks, the New Hampshire Bankers Association said; as of the Aug. 25 announcement, no technology provider had been selected. Kathy Kraninger, president and chief executive of the Florida Bankers Association and a former director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is serving as interim chair, according to CoinDesk.

A 2027 target hinges on a technology partner

BankChain Alliance is targeting a 2027 launch and is still selecting its technology partner, the New Hampshire Bankers Association said. That decision is the clearest concrete step still outstanding in the disclosed plan.

The alliance also intends for the network to be interoperable with other networks. No partner, underlying network design or timetable for the selection process was named in the announcement.

As a result, the 2027 date is a stated launch target rather than confirmation that the network’s technical build has been completed. The next identifiable milestone is the choice of the technology partner.

Tokenized deposits, stablecoins and settlement

The network’s planned use cases include smart payment tools, tokenized deposits, stablecoins and automated settlement.

CoinDesk reported that those proposed applications would operate within a regulated banking framework. BankChain Alliance has also disclosed banking-association backing, interim leadership, broad application areas and a target to launch in 2027.

The alliance is still selecting its technology partner, the next identifiable milestone between its formation and that proposed launch.
