TL;DR:

  • Binance will pause token deposits and withdrawals on the Base network on September 30, 2026, starting at 17:00 UTC.
  • The hard fork associated with Base’s Cobalt upgrade is scheduled to execute at 18:00 UTC on September 30, 2026.
  • Spot trading and exchange operations for Base-based tokens will remain active without interruption during the maintenance window.

Next Wednesday, September 30, crypto exchange Binance will temporarily suspend transfers on the Base network. The measure comes in response to technical preparations required to support the hard fork of the Layer 2 network developed by Coinbase.

The interruption of inbound and outbound flows will begin at approximately 17:00 UTC. In its official announcement, Binance stated that the Base protocol will implement the Cobalt technical upgrade at 18:00 UTC on the same day, at which point the network will execute structural changes across its consensus and execution layers.

Trading services will not experience interruptions. Buy and sell orders for assets issued on Base will continue operating normally on the platform, as the exchange will internally handle software requirements and node synchronization.

The resumption of operations does not have a fixed preliminary schedule. Information released by the platform indicates that deposits and withdrawals will reopen once engineers verify that the upgraded network is operating stably, a process that will take place without requiring further notices.

Technical Highlights of the Cobalt Hard Fork on the Base Network

The Cobalt upgrade introduces substantial modifications to Ethereum’s Layer 2 infrastructure. Official development notes from Base indicate that the hard fork optimizes the B20 token standard, allowing transaction fees to be settled directly using these assets, enabling scheduled multiplier updates, and introducing new operational directives dubbed Union and Intersect.

Additionally, the architecture integrates a validity transaction mechanism alongside the Dynamic Upgrades feature. This tool deploys a smart contract on the Ethereum mainnet that stores timestamps for Base nodes, allowing the network to apply live code updates without requiring node operators to manually reboot their execution clients.

The protocol also redefines the signer registry in trusted execution environments (TEEs). According to technical data published by the Base team, AWS Nitro attestations will transition to being verified entirely on-chain via verified P-384 curves, phasing out the proof pipeline previously dependent on RISC Zero and Boundless.

The rollout of Cobalt marks the start of a series of operational transitions planned for the ecosystem during the fourth quarter of the year. Base roadmap reports note that the network plans to deploy a complementary upgrade named Denim in October 2026, aimed at reducing native block times to 200-millisecond intervals and introducing high-precision RPC timestamps.
