TLDRs;
- Boeing shares jumped after FAA certification of the 737 MAX 7 strengthened investor confidence in the MAX program recovery.
- The larger MAX 10 remains the bigger prize, representing a significantly larger portion of Boeing’s aircraft backlog.
- Improving deliveries and stronger free cash flow provide additional support for Boeing’s long-term turnaround strategy.
- Investors now await MAX 10 approval while monitoring production growth and Boeing’s ongoing quality improvements.
Boeing (BA) stock surged nearly 8% after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the company’s 737 MAX 7, triggering renewed optimism around the aircraft manufacturer’s commercial recovery. Shares climbed 7.6% to $232.53 on Monday, adding an estimated $12.9 billion to Boeing’s market value as investors focused on the broader implications for the company’s MAX family.
The approval removed a major regulatory hurdle for Boeing’s smallest MAX variant and raised expectations that progress on the MAX 7 could accelerate momentum toward the much larger 737 MAX 10 program. While the MAX 7 represents a smaller portion of Boeing’s overall backlog, investors viewed the certification as a signal that Boeing is moving closer to restoring confidence in its aircraft development pipeline.
The FAA certification included updated software requirements, revised flightcrew alerts, and redesigned engine anti-ice hardware. Although FAA inspectors will continue monitoring Boeing facilities, the approval marked another step forward for the company after years of regulatory scrutiny.
MAX 10 Remains the Bigger Opportunity
However, the market reaction was driven less by the immediate revenue impact of the MAX 7 and more by what it could mean for Boeing’s larger MAX 10 ambitions. The MAX 7 accounts for about 282 orders, representing roughly 6% of Boeing’s MAX backlog. Meanwhile, the MAX 10 makes up at least 28% of the backlog, giving it nearly five times the order exposure.
Boeing executives highlighted the connection between the two aircraft programs. Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Stephanie Pope said lessons from the MAX 7 certification process are already being applied to the MAX 10, which has completed hundreds of certification flights and thousands of flight hours.
Cash Flow Recovery Supports Turnaround
Furthermore, Boeing’s latest financial performance provided additional support for the stock rally. The company reported stronger operating momentum in the second quarter, with free cash flow reaching $631 million compared with a $200 million outflow during the same period a year earlier.
Revenue increased 8% year-over-year to $24.56 billion, while commercial aircraft deliveries rose 14% to 171 jets. The improvement reflected better production stability and increased aircraft shipments, although profitability challenges remain. Boeing still posted a $428 million loss during the quarter, showing that the company’s recovery is still underway.
Chief Executive Kelly Ortberg said operations have become more stable, but Boeing continues facing pressure from its large debt burden. The company ended the period with approximately $45.9 billion in consolidated debt, making consistent cash generation a key priority.
Investors Watch MAX 10 Milestone
Meanwhile, analysts have become more optimistic about Boeing’s outlook following the latest certification achievement. BNP Paribas Exane analyst Matthew Akers upgraded Boeing to outperform and raised his price target from $230 to $300, citing expectations for stronger free cash flow in coming years.
The analyst projected Boeing could generate approximately $7 billion in free cash flow by 2027, supported by improving deliveries and operational improvements.
Despite the positive reaction, investors remain aware of several risks. The MAX 10 has not yet received final approval, FAA oversight remains active, and aircraft certification alone does not immediately translate into revenue. Boeing must still deliver completed aircraft and receive payments from customers.
