CFTC Registers Coinbase Clearing as USDC-Native Derivatives Clearinghouse

Coinbase has secured U.S. regulatory approval to operate its own derivatives clearinghouse, adding an in-house settlement layer to a derivatives business that already includes a regulated futures exchange and futures commission merchant.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization on September 28, permitting it to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps. The approval gives Coinbase direct control over clearing for eligible products rather than requiring every contract to pass through an outside clearing organization.

Coinbase Clearing will use USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement, bringing the always-on settlement model common in crypto markets into its regulated U.S. derivatives infrastructure.

Fully Collateralized Contracts Remove Margin Calculations

Every product cleared through Coinbase Clearing must be fully collateralized. That structure removes the need to calculate variation margin or maintain a default fund under the clearing model approved with its application.

Clearing services can be provided directly to market participants and to customers of futures commission merchants that become Coinbase Clearing members. Funds held in clearing-member accounts must remain separate from Coinbase Clearing’s own assets and are treated as member property under U.S. bankruptcy rules.

The clearinghouse joins Coinbase Financial Markets, its registered futures commission merchant, and Coinbase Derivatives, its designated contract market. Together, the three entities give Coinbase an exchange, brokerage and clearing layer inside the CFTC-regulated derivatives system.

“Today’s CFTC approval completes Coinbase’s end-to-end derivatives infrastructure,” General Counsel Molly Abraham said, adding that the company can now bring more regulated products to market with native USDC collateral and continuous settlement.

Coinbase Keeps Expanding U.S. Derivatives Stack

The registration arrives during a broader expansion of regulated crypto derivatives in the United States. CFTC staff opened a faster route in June for qualifying crypto perpetual futures to remove their long-dated expirations, including contracts listed by Coinbase Derivatives.

Coinbase Financial Markets also received a path to provide eligible U.S. clients with access to certain Deribit perpetuals through its regulated futures commission merchant structure.

Not every Coinbase derivatives product will immediately move onto the new clearinghouse. The company will continue using existing partners for its margined derivatives business and its planned single-stock perpetuals, which were submitted to the CFTC earlier this month.

Coinbase Clearing’s registration became effective September 28 and remains limited to fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps. The CFTC can modify, suspend or restrict the order if the facts supporting the registration materially change.
