On Friday, September 25, 2026, CBC News reported that a couple from Kingsville, Ontario, lost more than $200,000 in an online cryptocurrency investment scam, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.
Investigators said the fraud began in July and continued until it was reported to authorities on September 19. Police stated the couple came across an investment opportunity advertised on a widely used messaging platform and believed they were putting their money into bitcoin.
According to the OPP, the pair were offered assurances of substantial profits on their money. Their suspicions were raised only after the person contacting them online began asking for further payments beyond their original investment.
Police have not released additional details about the identity of the couple or the specific platform used to advertise the scheme, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Alongside the report, the OPP issued a list of precautions for the public, including avoiding sharing personal information, not accepting friend requests from strangers, and refusing to invest through platforms operated by unknown individuals.
Officers also urged residents to be cautious about sharing personal images, to secure their online accounts, and to never transfer money to anyone they have not personally met.
