China’s DeepSeek has announced a new experimental AI model capable of image processing. With this, it has introduced a visual dimension to its latest group of AI systems.
DeepSeek Eyes Rolling Out New AI Model To Rival Anthropic’s Opus 4.8
It is an extension of the company’s V4 Flash platform, with a new model called DeepSeek-V4-Flash-Vision-Exp. It is more visual than the previous text-only version, which is able to process visual inputs. Users can upload images and screenshots and request that the system analyze the images or do some tasks based on the content.
According to DeepSeek, while it is an experimental release, it retains the text capabilities of V4 Flash. These include reasoning, agentic tasks and general knowledge. The new system was touted by the company as an extension of its flagship model line that is multimodal.
“This experimental multimodal model matches DeepSeek-V4-Flash on text capabilities—including agents, reasoning, and world knowledge,” DeepSeek wrote in a post on X.
The firm also conducted a comparison of the model with Anthropic’s newest high-performance AI model. This launch sparked curiosity as previously a White House official accused China’s Moonshot of secretly copying Anthropic’s Fable series models for the development of K3 AI.
In evaluations of multimodal agentic performance, DeepSeek’s new system was similar to Anthropic’s Opus 4.8, according to the firm. For context, these tests evaluate the performance of AI systems when performing tasks with minimal human involvement and using visual information. The systems can understand the input and can respond to more than one stimulus.
DeepSeek’s AI models already exist and are specialized in analyzing images. It has designed its DeepSeek-VL series around visual-language aspects. The new version adds the same features to the firm’s newer V4 model family.
The experimental model is offered by the company’s application programming interface. This provides a way for developers to include its GUI functionality in their applications and services.
Competition Grows With SpaceX, Anthropic In The Picture
The release comes on the heels of competition among top AI developers getting tougher. DeepSeek is one of the leading AI start-ups in China and it has been making strides to add more models to its portfolio.
The launch also comes after Anthropic has announced plans to go public. The AI firm is reportedly planning to go public that could be second only to Elon Musk-led SpaceX’s record-breaking offering. About $86.2 billion was raised in total in SpaceX’s IPO, including an overallotment.
Now, the Anthropic vs. SpaceX debate has heated up with many expecting the former to outshine the Musk-backed company’s IPO.
Earlier reports said Anthropic has the option to file for its IPO as early as this month. Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan reportedly are making preparations for the offering.
