Coinbase (COIN) stock slipped 0.86% as the company expanded its UK platform beyond cryptocurrency trading. Eligible UK users can now access nearly 4,000 US stocks through the Coinbase app. The launch adds 24/5 trading, zero commissions, fractional shares, and direct funding through GBP or USDC.
Coinbase Adds US Stocks for UK Users
Coinbase began the phased rollout on August 6 for eligible customers across the United Kingdom. Users can buy, sell, and manage US equities beside their crypto and cash balances. The company allows fractional purchases from £1, lowering the entry point for smaller accounts.
The service operates 24 hours daily from Monday through Friday, extending access beyond standard market sessions. However, fractional share trading remains unavailable outside regular US market hours. Currency movements may also affect trades because US shares remain priced in dollars.
Coinbase routes orders through Coinbase Capital Markets Corporation for execution by Apex. Apex Clearing holds the shares and manages settlement within the United States. This structure keeps equity trading separate from Coinbase’s digital asset custody operations.
Everything Exchange Strategy Expands in Britain
The launch supports Coinbase’s plan to combine traditional finance and digital assets inside one platform. Its UK product range now includes crypto trading, savings accounts, borrowing services, stablecoins, and equities. The company aims to reduce the need for customers to manage several financial applications.
USDC funding gives existing stablecoin holders a direct path into American stock markets. Coinbase One members can also earn uncapped rewards on eligible USDC balances. This feature strengthens USDC’s role across the company’s wider product system.
Coinbase introduced conventional shares before tokenized equities to deliver immediate market access. However, the company still views tokenized stocks as a future expansion area. It plans to work with regulators before offering those products in Britain.
Regulatory Access Supports Coinbase Growth
Coinbase’s UK MiFID licence widened its ability to offer regulated financial products. The licence supports retail equity services and may also enable derivatives for professional clients. The company can expand beyond its original cryptocurrency business under clearer rules.
The United Kingdom plans to introduce its new crypto framework in October 2027. The Financial Conduct Authority expects to open its authorization gateway in September. Coinbase believes the framework will support further product launches across Britain and Europe.
The expansion could improve stock access among UK retail participants with limited market exposure. Still, out-of-hours trading, foreign exchange movements, and fractional limits create added risks. Coinbase stock’s slight decline suggests the launch did not trigger an immediate positive market reaction.
