Florida State Rep. and democratic socialist Angie Nixon won the Democratic Party’s Senate primary in Florida on Tuesday, becoming the latest in a growing number of left-leaning candidates to have scored a major upset against a well-funded rival.

Key Facts

According to the Associated Press, which called the race at 8 p.m. E.T., Nixon secured 56.0% of the votes with nearly all ballots counted.

Her rival, Alex Vindman—who first came into the spotlight while testifying against President Donald Trump during his first impeachment trial in 2019—received 44% of the vote.

Nixon win comes despite Vindman being a significantly better-funded candidate—having raised over $16 million.

In the midterms, Nixon will go up against incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., who was appointed to the Senate last year after Marco Rubio vacated the seat to serve as Secretary of State.

The winner will serve out the remainder of Rubio’s term.

What Did Nixon Say After Her Win?

Speaking to supporters after the race was called, Nixon said: “We have proved that everyday people are more powerful than corporations and billionaires…We went up against the political establishment, against millions of dollars of outside spending, we were outspent 16 to 1, and we won. This win was for the little guys and girls…We, the hardworking everyday people of Florida, sent a shock wave to the Washington, D.C., establishment.”

Moody remains a strong favorite to win the election in November in the red state, with The Cook Political Report, Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball, and Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin rating the race as either Safely Republican or Likely Republican. Betting markets also heavily favor a Republican win in the Florida Senate Race, with Polymarket bookmaker pegging the odds at 89.6% while Kalshi bettors putting the odds at 92%.
