The Ethereum diaspora will have an address once every year. In 2026, that address will be Mumbai. The Ethereum Foundation announced that Devcon 8, the networking, education, and development event for builders, researchers, and community organisers, will be held Nov. 3-6 at the Jio World Centre just days before Diwali, making it the first Devcon to be hosted in South Asia and this way tilting the global centre of gravity for Ethereum development to India.
For four days, Devcon will unite core teams and applications for building with Ethereum. Like in previous years, the conference will have a developer-first focus: Ethereum protocol research, client teams, Layer-2 infrastructure, and community coordination.
Why Mumbai and Why Now
For its eighth iteration, Devcon is heading to Mumbai because of both the concentration of developers and the community’s engagement.
As the Foundation’s December 23, 2025 blog post, India is home to more than 17 million developers on GitHub, has been the largest source of new crypto developers since 2023 and has ranked first in Chainalysis’ global adoption rankings for the past two years. The decision draws from editions in Bogota, Osaka, and Bangkok, feeding into the rotation that reduces regional hurdles.
Mumbai offers links across India and Asia, staying close to grassroots communities like ETHMumbai Devfolio Polygon Labs and Avail. Electric Capital’s 2024 Developer Report calculated that India added 4,500 new open-source crypto developers annually, second to the US.
India’s environment remains difficult. It has a flat 30% tax on crypto gains and 1% TDS with no loss offset among some of the toughest regimes for retail investors. But momentum is shifting. RBI CBDC pilots, enterprise ethereum layer-2 adoption, and the courts’ view on proportional regulation are all encouraging signs ahead of 2026.

What to Expect at Jio World Centre
The event will expect more than 10,000 attendees, focusing on tracks from execution layer, consensus layer, zero-knowledge research, Layer-2 scaling, account abstraction and split up social. Client teams that will anchor programming include Geth, Nethermind, Besu, and Prysm, with Layer-2 teams like Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and Starknet.

Ticket sale started July 14, 2026. General admission costs started from $499 in ETH or $999 in fiat for wave one, jacking up to $599 in ETH or $1,199 for later. Also, the Foundation subsidized local access at $99 early-bird for Indian residents, $25 for Indian students and free for core contributors.
Monitoring the Ethereum development progress, Devcon 8 arrives at an age where Dencun and Pectra upgrades have made Layer-2 data costs more efficient, while PeerDAS, Verkle Trees and enshrined proposer-builder separation are still actively investigated. This event should also help clarify the timeline for a subsequent hard fork.

Broader Ramifications
Devcon’s location coincides with two vectors: decibelization of developer talent geographically and Ethereum’s ambitions as settlement layer for tokenized assets, stablecoins, and DePIN.
With spot Ethereum ETFs eclipsing US$12.1 billion in net assets by Q3 2026 per SoSoValue and Layer-2 TVL exceeding US$45 billion per L2BEAT, institutional footprint has spanned beyond western markets. For exchanges, funds, and ecosystem teams, Mumbai draws the flow from one of the fastest expanding user markets.

Road to Devcon events, meetups, and hackathons across Bangalore Delhi Hyderabad, and Chennai will scale through Q2 and Q3. Impact will not be measured in headlinesbut in commits: whether Devcon 8 turns India’s developer wave into lifelong contributors and native applications built on Ethereum.
