Vitalik Buterin Supports Recursive STARK Aggregation in EIP-8288 for I-Star

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has given new importance to EIP-8288, which suggests recursive STARK aggregation for cryptographic signatures and proofs. According to a recent post made by Buterin on X, he hopes EIP-8288 can be included in I-Star, which follows Hegota, describing it as the next step after Frames.

What makes this initiative particularly interesting is the time at which it has been brought up. On September 7, the Ethereum Foundation said it is targeting quantum resistance across Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers by December 2029.

The Foundation described this self-imposed deadline as “non-negotiable” at least until January 2027.

Recursive STARKs as a Way to Decrease Cryptographic Costs

According to the draft of EIP-8288, transactions would use lightweight dependency frames containing information about signatures or proofs.

Instead of verifying each cryptographic object separately on-chain, Ethereum’s mempool could aggregate these dependencies into a single recursive STARK.

Vitalik Buterin argues that this approach could significantly reduce the cost of quantum-safe applications. He believes quantum-safe private transactions, which can currently cost around 10 million gas, could potentially fall to the low tens of thousands of gas.

Furthermore, the proposal could allow new signature and proof schemes to be supported without requiring separate EVM changes for each scheme.

A New Function for Ethereum’s Mempool

Under the proposed design, mempool nodes would aggregate transaction dependencies and generate recursive STARK proofs. A block builder could then construct a proof covering the dependencies of transactions included in a block.

The EIP states that “the block contains one single recursive STARK that proves their existence”, rather than directly containing all user-submitted signatures and STARKs. The proposal also describes dependency data using 96-byte statements and a recursive STARK at the block level.

EIP-8288 Remains a Draft

However, EIP-8288 is still a draft proposal and has not been implemented in Ethereum’s live protocol. Its adoption will depend on further research, implementation work and whether it is ultimately included in a future network upgrade.
