TLDRs;
- Factory setbacks forced Fluence to cut revenue and EBITDA guidance, triggering a sharp stock selloff.
- Investors are focused on whether Fluence can generate roughly $1.41 billion in fourth-quarter revenue.
- Record orders and backlog remain strong, but margin deterioration has raised concerns about execution quality.
- Rising inventory and lower cash levels have intensified scrutiny of working-capital and delivery risks.
Fluence Energy shares came under heavy pressure on Wednesday after the battery-storage company lowered its fiscal 2026 outlook and revealed production setbacks that pushed hundreds of millions of dollars in expected deliveries into the next fiscal year. The market reaction was swift, with the stock falling 9.2% during regular trading before extending losses in after-hours trading.
The sharp decline reflected more than a guidance cut. Investors appeared increasingly concerned about whether Fluence can convert its rapidly growing backlog into revenue without further damaging margins or straining cash flow. The company now faces a daunting fourth-quarter hurdle, needing roughly $1.41 billion in revenue to reach the midpoint of its revised annual forecast.
Guidance reset shocks investors
Fluence reduced its fiscal 2026 revenue range to $2.9 billion-$3.1 billion from the previous $3.2 billion-$3.6 billion. The midpoint of the forecast fell by $400 million, while adjusted EBITDA guidance dropped by $60 million and now points to a potential loss for the year.
Management attributed the reset to two separate factory-related issues: challenges involving a global contract manufacturing partner and ongoing work at a new U.S. production facility. The company also disclosed that a battery-supply agreement will require an additional $15 million in upfront costs.
Although the revised forecast is lower, the numbers still imply an exceptionally strong finish to the fiscal year. With revenue totaling about $1.59 billion during the first nine months, Fluence would need approximately $1.31 billion to hit the low end of guidance, $1.41 billion to reach the midpoint, and $1.51 billion to achieve the high end.
For investors, that requirement has become the central issue. Delivering more than $1.4 billion in a single quarter would represent a dramatic acceleration from recent performance and a substantial increase from the prior year’s fourth quarter.
Orders surge but margins collapse
The disappointing outlook came despite strong demand indicators. Third-quarter order intake exceeded $1.44 billion, nearly triple the level recorded a year earlier. Fluence also reported that its backlog reached a record $6.4 billion, supported by continued growth in data-center-related energy-storage projects.
Revenue rose 7.9% year over year to $649.8 million, but gross margin collapsed to 5.1% from 14.8% in the comparable period last year. The company swung to a net loss of $44.3 million, compared with a profit of $6.9 million a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA also turned negative, falling to -$29.3 million from +$27.4 million.
Backlog strength meets execution risk
Chief Executive Julian Nebreda acknowledged that production levels have been running below expectations throughout the year. He said the company expects output to improve by the beginning of fiscal 2027, while Chief Financial Officer Ahmed Pasha emphasized that delayed revenue has not disappeared and remains in backlog.
That distinction is important. The market is no longer questioning whether customers want Fluence’s products; it is questioning whether the company can deliver them on time and at acceptable margins.
The backlog is now more than twice the midpoint of revised annual revenue guidance, suggesting significant future demand. Yet analysts are increasingly focused on the timing of backlog conversion, especially after the company delayed about $400 million in deliveries into fiscal 2027.
