Gemini’s AI-driven app adoption in Southeast Asia is surging, with local language capabilities and mobile-first features driving engagement.
Gemini, Google’s AI-driven app, is seeing record-breaking adoption across Southeast Asia, with active users in the region doubling over the past year. According to the company’s first-ever Southeast Asia Report, the app’s localized language capabilities and mobile-first design are key drivers of its growing popularity in markets like Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand.
The region’s demographics play a major role in this surge. Nearly 40% of Southeast Asia’s 600 million people are under 25, forming a highly tech-savvy base eager to embrace AI tools. Gemini’s ability to fluently handle native languages, with 70% of user prompts submitted in local languages, has positioned it as a standout performer. Vietnam leads this trend with 89% of prompts written in Vietnamese, followed by Thailand (87%) and Indonesia (84%).
Mobile usage is another critical factor. In a region where smartphones are ubiquitous, 75% of Gemini interactions occur on mobile devices. Beyond text, users are increasingly leveraging voice commands and multimedia inputs, with over 40% of prompts involving photos, videos, or voice. Features like Gemini Live, which enables voice-only interactions, are particularly popular, underscoring the app’s flexibility in adapting to user behaviors.
Creative applications are also driving engagement. Southeast Asia’s users have generated five billion images using Gemini’s Nano Banana image model and nearly one million songs via its Lyria 3 music generation tool over the past year. This highlights the app’s role not just as a functional assistant but as a creative collaborator in areas ranging from document writing to multimedia production.
Gemini’s Strategic Focus on Southeast Asia
Gemini’s rapid growth in Southeast Asia aligns with broader strategic shifts by its parent company. After exiting the UK and European Economic Area in April 2026, Gemini has concentrated resources on core markets, including the U.S. and Singapore. Singapore serves as the company’s primary Southeast Asian hub, benefiting from regulatory clarity provided by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
While Gemini’s primary operations have focused on digital asset trading and custody, its AI-driven tools offer a complementary growth avenue in Southeast Asia. The region’s unique combination of young digital natives, a mobile-first culture, and linguistic diversity makes it an ideal testing ground for product innovation. Gemini’s long-term strategy includes integrating its AI solutions into broader ecosystems such as Google Workspace, enabling users to automate tasks across Gmail, Docs, and other platforms through the new Gemini Spark feature.
Market Implications
As Gemini expands its AI footprint in Southeast Asia, the company’s broader focus on efficiency and user engagement remains critical to its financial health. In Q1 2026, Gemini reported $11.1 billion in assets on platform and secured a $100 million strategic bitcoin investment to strengthen its balance sheet amid market volatility. These moves reflect a balancing act between scaling innovative solutions like Gemini AI and maintaining core financial resilience.
For traders and investors, Gemini’s regional success underscores the growing importance of Asia-Pacific in the digital asset and AI sectors. With Southeast Asia’s tech-savvy population embracing AI at record levels, this market could serve as a blueprint for global expansion strategies involving localized and mobile-first approaches.
Looking ahead, Gemini plans to further enhance its AI offerings, rolling out tools like Gemini Spark in local languages for premium subscribers. As the app continues to evolve, its success in Southeast Asia will likely influence the global trajectory of AI adoption.
