Kenya anchored more than 15 million academic records on the Avalanche C-Chain blockchain through the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), in an initiative that transforms the way the country verifies educational credentials.

The system, developed alongside a local technology provider through the LegitDoc platform, turns each certificate into an immutable digital asset, instantly auditable and resistant to tampering.

Until now, academic credential verification in Kenya relied on manual processes that could take anywhere from one month to six months for high-volume recruiters. Previous modernization attempts, such as the incorporation of QR codes into physical documents, were tied to traditional databases vulnerable to impersonation.

The new system anchors records dating back to 1989 and makes KCSE 2025 certificates available exclusively in digital format to nearly one million students.

The projection is to reach around 35 million verifiable records, covering primary and secondary levels as well as teacher certification programs. “Candidates no longer rely solely on physical certificates,” said KNEC Executive Director David Njengere.
