Mastercard will sponsor a 36-hour Mastercard XRP Ledger hackathon in New York on October 24–25, XRPL Commons announced on August 26. Participants will be able to build blockchain applications ahead of the Swell conference organized by Ripple. Participation in the hackathon means Mastercard’s presence in the developer community, not a new product announcement.

Developers can participate in the hackathon on four tracks related to protocol innovation, agentic finance, lending and borrowing, and open category. Participants working on the protocol track will develop network amendments, client implementations, and developer tools. Other developers may build financial applications and integrate Mastercard XRP Ledger technology into existing projects without developing an entire product.

The Mastercard XRP Ledger event is significant because it connects a major payments company with developers exploring blockchain-based financial infrastructure. However, XRPL Commons did not reveal any information about financial support for the hackathon provided by Mastercard, the judging process, or the technical role of Mastercard in it.

Mastercard XRP Ledger hackathon occurs as Mastercard continues to expand its blockchain and stablecoin solution. In June, Mastercard announced the development of infrastructure that will allow stablecoin settlement using eight blockchain networks, including the XRP Ledger. The assets mentioned by Mastercard included USDC, SoFiUSD, selected Paxos stablecoins, and Ripple USD (RLUSD).

According to Mastercard, this infrastructure will allow issuers and acquirers more flexible settlement timing, including intraday, weekend, and holiday settlements. The initiative depends on participating institutions, markets, and Mastercard staged rollouts. Therefore, XRP Ledger settlement is just one settlement option rather than proof of using XRP Ledger for all Mastercard transactions.

The connection to Mastercard, Ripple, WebBank, and Gemini goes even further. In November 2025, the companies announced the exploration of RLUSD settlement for Gemini credit card transactions on the XRP Ledger. WebBank issues the Gemini Credit Card, while Mastercard operates the payment network, creating a potential institutional use case for regulated stablecoin settlement.

That initiative remains distinct from the October hackathon. The companies described the RLUSD project as an exploration, meaning the announcement did not guarantee a full commercial rollout. Likewise, Mastercard has not said that it will launch any application developed during the hackathon or provide participating teams with access to its payment network.

What Mastercard XRP Ledger Means for XRP

Mastercard executives have framed on-chain settlement around payment needs rather than speculation. Raj Dhamodharan, Mastercard’s blockchain and digital assets executive, said stablecoin adoption is moving toward real-world settlement where timing and liquidity matter. Ripple’s Jack McDonald said RLUSD’s inclusion reflects demand for regulated stablecoins serving financial uses on public blockchains.

For XRP holders and developers, the key takeaway is that Mastercard’s sponsorship strengthens institutional visibility around XRPL but does not automatically create XRP demand. RLUSD settlement can use the ledger without making XRP the settlement asset itself. Next milestones include registration, participation, October’s projects, and separate Mastercard announcements on integrations.
