Meta Platforms said an automated security system mistakenly suspended the Instagram account of the No Kings Coalition. The suspension happened during a nationwide series of demonstrations on Saturday.

Meta apologized and gave a more detailed explanation on Sunday. The disruption came during the group’s early-voting push ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

Andy Stone, Meta’s vice president of communications, shared the details in a social media post. He said the company’s engineering team had reviewed what happened.

What Meta says triggered the suspension

Instagram’s engineers found that “reading” activity set off the security system. A tool from Anthropic’s Claude was accessing profiles, posts and hashtags.

The tool was making requests at roughly four times the normal rate. The activity came in intense bursts on Saturday.

“These abrupt, high-volume, sequential requests in a short period resembled automated bot traffic rather than an ordinary human browsing our systems,” Stone said. The system treated the pattern as a possible bot.

Meta said an automated review about an hour later found the account should not have been removed. The company restored it, though returning administrative access took longer.

“We want to reiterate our sincere apology for the error,” Stone said. He did not say which Claude tool was involved.

Stone also did not say who was operating the tool. He did not say what activity it was carrying out in connection with the account.

The explanation updated Meta’s first account of the incident. On Saturday, Stone said unusually high rates of posting, sharing or commenting had triggered the automated systems. He called the action “clearly” an error.

How the coalition responded

The No Kings Coalition, an anti-Trump group, said its Instagram page was unavailable for about 90 minutes on Saturday. Organizers stayed locked out even after the page became publicly visible again.

The coalition said full access was restored at 5:33 p.m. New York time on Saturday. It did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Meta’s latest explanation.

Organizers criticized Meta for restricting the account during the demonstrations. They said Instagram was a crucial platform for communicating with supporters.

The coalition said millions of people took part in nearly 3,000 events. The events took place in all 50 states and Washington.

The group said the aim was to expand early vote access and defend election integrity. It has organized several anti-Trump protests since Trump was inaugurated.

No Kings plans a national organizing call on Wednesday focused on turnout. The midterm elections are set for Nov. 3.
