A new show has planted itself as #1 on Netflix’s top 10 list for over a week now, and despite new series introduced daily, it has not budged. We’ll see if that’s true when The Gentlemen season 2’s viewership is counted, but the show has captured audiences and has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics.

The show is Death of the Pastor’s Wife, a true crime documentary. While Netflix releases plenty of those, few hold this position on the site for this long, and few land 100% Rotten Tomatoes review scores, albeit this is not with many critics chiming in yet. It does not have an audience score, but it does have a 6.7 on IMDB, which is good in the context of that site. (Content warning for self-harm follows)

The three-part documentary focuses on Mica Miller, a worship leader and ministry director who was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in April 2024. While there is no debate about how she died, the documentary focuses on the events that led up to her death and what might have contributed to it. The documentary discusses evidence and has interviews with friends and family. “We met with Mica’s family and made sure they felt comfortable entrusting us with her story,” co-director Mike Gasparro said.

A focus is on the pastor in The Pastor’s Wife title, John-Paul Miller, who was not charged in her death but was indicted on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators. Mica’s death was just two days after Miller was served with divorce papers.

Death of the Pastor’s Wife is not listed as a miniseries, and at least on Rotten Tomatoes is classified as “season 1,” so there may be more to follow, as some of these true crime shows last longer than just one-off seasons. Clearly there is a lot of interest in this case from Netflix viewers.

Here’s what some critics have said about the series:

  • Decider – “Death Of The Pastor’s Wife is a harrowing but riveting story of infidelity, control and obsession hiding behind a curtain of faith and devotion to Jesus.”
  • RogerEbert.com – “Nason and Gasparro expertly navigate the challenge of telling a lurid story without sensationalizing the details or exploiting the victim.”

Obviously this is rather dark subject matter, so it will not be for everyone, but there is a large true crime audience on Netflix, which has propelled the series to the top spot. It quickly unseated the final season of the popular Outer Banks and remains above new seasons of Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black and Leanna. The Gentlemen season 2 drops today after a long break. We’ll see how long it stays where it is, or nearby.
