The organization had been spending several months raising concerns over how the proposed bill could pose challenges for law enforcement agencies dealing with financial crimes and any related illicit use of cryptocurrencies.

NSA expressed in a letter to legislators that the bill still contains many complexities and many critical aspects have yet to be considered. The NSA thinks that the ideal solution would be for Congress to resolve any issues that remain unresolved.

It is a significant difference from how the NSA viewed the situation at an earlier point in time. The agency was concerned about the lack of proper instruments for dealing with illegal use of cryptocurrencies by the authorities.

NSA Clarity Act Position Changes Ahead of Senate Vote

This latest development on the NSA Clarity Act can be a boost for the people working to get sufficient votes for the bill in the Senate.

It is one more hurdle that has been raised by the NSA in the minds of legislators when thinking about supporting this piece of legislation. It is particularly important for Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada).

By adopting neutrality rather than continuing its opposition to the bill, the National Sheriffs’ Association is no longer involved in lobbying against the bill. Additionally, it was clear from the response that lawmakers need to be allowed to solve the outstanding issues through the legislative process.

It could now give proponents enough space to engage the lawmakers with lingering concerns over the bill’s impact on law enforcement.

Major Issues Still Remain for CLARITY Act

Even though the creation of the NSA Clarity Act eliminates one significant area of disagreement, there are still many tough political and policy considerations associated with this piece of legislation.

The most problematic among them is probably the restrictions that will limit the president’s financial benefit from digital currency. The lawmakers have not yet agreed on the exact wording of the restrictions.

This could definitely pose a challenge when it comes to reaching an overall consensus concerning the bill. This particular topic has generated quite a lot of interest as legislators strive to formulate certain guidelines regarding conflict of interest and the regulation of the cryptocurrency sector altogether.

The CLARITY Act seeks to set clear guidelines for cryptocurrencies and how different segments of the cryptocurrency market will be regulated. Proponents of the bill argue that the legislation will offer more clarity for crypto firms while placing more responsibility on regulators.

As for the NSA Clarity Act, the decision of the association will not mean that the bill is going to be passed. Nevertheless, the shift from an opposing position to a neutral one is definitely significant under the circumstances, as supporters of the bill in the Senate try to gain additional support.

Future negotiations are expected to decide whether the bill will be able to overcome its other political obstacles. The Senate vote coming up soon leaves not much time for negotiating and getting the necessary support.
