OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6: Sol, Terra, Luna Models Go Live

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5.6, its latest family of AI models, marking a significant step forward in performance, efficiency, and scalability. The release includes three distinct tiers—Sol, Terra, and Luna—designed to accommodate varying needs, from high-capability enterprise tasks to cost-efficient workflows. The models are now available globally through OpenAI’s API, ChatGPT, and Codex, with rollout starting July 9, 2026.

GPT-5.6 Sol, the flagship model, delivers state-of-the-art results across domains like coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity, and scientific reasoning. According to OpenAI, Sol achieves 53.6 on the ‘Agents’ Last Exam,’ a benchmark for professional workflows, outperforming Claude Fable 5 by 13.1 points while reducing token usage and costs. For less demanding tasks, Luna offers the most affordable option, while Terra provides balanced performance suitable for everyday applications.

The new models emphasize efficiency. Sol, for example, can run complex tasks with fewer tokens, faster execution, and lower costs compared to its predecessors. OpenAI’s ‘ultra’ setting enables the model to coordinate multiple agents in parallel, significantly accelerating workflows like code reviews and multi-step problem-solving. Sol also scored 80 on the ‘Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index,’ setting a new benchmark in coding capabilities.

Safety remains a critical focus. GPT-5.6 boasts OpenAI’s most robust safeguards to date, incorporating layered protections such as real-time monitoring and access permissions calibrated to user trust levels. The model underwent extensive testing, including red teaming and automated evaluations, to ensure resilience against misuse while maintaining legitimate functionality.

Tiered pricing reflects the model’s versatility. Sol is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, while Terra and Luna cost significantly less, making advanced AI accessible to a broader audience. Luna, for instance, delivers competitive performance at just $1 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens.

The launch comes amid a surge in AI adoption, with GPT-5.6 positioned as a cornerstone of OpenAI’s evolving ‘AI work system.’ Unlike earlier models, GPT-5.6 integrates tiered capabilities and structured workflows, catering to diverse sectors such as finance, cybersecurity, and life sciences. Early evaluations suggest meaningful gains in efficiency and task completion rates, with users reporting up to 48% fewer tool calls and 15% fewer stuck tasks during app development.

For developers, GPT-5.6 introduces ‘Programmatic Tool Calling’ via the Responses API, enabling the model to autonomously manage tools and intermediate results within workflows. This feature reduces token usage and increases adaptability, making it ideal for complex, tool-heavy tasks.

OpenAI’s rollout coincides with recent policy shifts, including the lifting of U.S. government restrictions on GPT-5.6’s export. This regulatory green light underscores the model’s strategic importance in global AI development and enterprise adoption.

With GPT-5.6, OpenAI aims to not only push the boundaries of AI capabilities but also set a new standard for accessible, efficient intelligence across industries. For businesses and developers, the model offers a compelling mix of higher performance and cost-efficiency, making it a pivotal upgrade in AI-driven workflows.
