Back-to-back Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain reportedly has an agreement with Atletico Madrid in relation to FC Barcelona target Julian Alvarez.
Transfer market experts such as Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday how the Catalans have made a bid of $116 million (€100 million) for the Argentine.
This came on the same day Anthony Gordon’s $93 million (€80 million) transfer from Newcastle United was announced, as Barça begun a new era of busy buying activity akin to that of pre-pandemic yesteryear.
It’s hard to keep up with what are often referred to as the “state-run” clubs in Spain, however, and PSG are a genuine threat to Barça’s hopes of landing Alvarez.
As explained by SPORT, PSG has confirmed its interest in Alvarez but asked for formal negotiations to be postponed until after the Champions League final.
PSG clinched that on penalties against Premier League winners Arsenal after drawing 1-1 in regular time. And the decision to not have the spectacle in Budapest distracted by transfer rumors that might trigger internal tensions proved to be a masterstroke.
Julian Alvarez is aware of PSG’s interest
The World Cup champion in 2022 is aware of PSG’s interest in him while Atletico awaits an offer exceeding $116 million (€100 million).
The Rojiblancos paid $109.5 million (€94 million) for Alvarez from Manchester City in 2024, and want to make a profit on a player that isn’t convinced by the sporting project at the Metropolitano after failing to win trophies in his two seasons there thus far.
With no out-and-out striker other than bit-part Goncalo Ramos, Luis Enrique wants a versatile front man with Alvarez fitting that bill perfectly.
If Barça truly have made contact with Alvarez’s camp, they need to convince the attacker to hold out and wait for Deco and Co. while they get the funds together and increase their bid.
This is done at a drop of a hat by PSG, but ultimately Alvarez would need to decide whether he wants to join an outfit that is already the finished product and on the verge of mounting a dynasty like Real Madrid in the 2010s, or another that has great potential at the Spotify Camp Nou where he dreamed of playing as a child.
Barça legend Luis Enrique, who won the Blaugrana their last UCL crown in 2015, could also be influential here. Earlier in 2026, we also saw him turn Dro Fernandez’s head and persuade the youngster to swap Catalonia for the French capital.
Over the summer, Luis Enrique could be a protagonist in the Julian Alvarez too.
