Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, is preparing to introduce a loan service that would let users use Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Tether (USDT) as collateral. This follows recent regulations issued by the Central Bank of Russia that will take effect on September 1, according to Crypto Briefing.

New Rules Open the Door to Crypto-Backed Lending

Russia is shifting its stance on digital currencies because of the introduction of laws that make it possible for banks to use crypto as collateral for loans. Previously, the only available option for crypto-based loans within the country was to sell the cryptocurrency holdings.

Through the new system, banks would be able to give loans to people who hold approved crypto assets.

Sberbank is ready to provide more services related to crypto other than loans. In addition, the bank intends to introduce the crypto wallet and digital custody services later in 2023. The new services may help customers store and handle their crypto via services from Sberbank.

Sberbank Could Help Expand Crypto Adoption

This will definitely increase the link between Russia’s banking industry and digital assets. The fact that Sberbank is the biggest player in Russia’s banking industry will also motivate others to offer similar services in the cryptocurrency sphere.

It will allow the bank to serve those people who have digital assets but lack other financial assets to use for borrowing purposes. Additionally, it will put the bank at the center of the emerging digital asset market in Russia.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT Holders Could Gain More Options

This will provide crypto owners from Russia with the opportunity to get some liquidity without selling their coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, or USDT.

The users will not be required to sell their assets to obtain financing but, rather, to use them as collateral. The value of their crypto assets might even go up in the future. But at the same time, there are always certain risks involved with such a deal.

The proposed lending service by Sberbank will be another example of moving digital currency into the country’s regulated financial environment. In view of the upcoming regulations to take place in September, the plan could affect the use of cryptocurrencies in Russia.
