Standard Chartered now lets UAE professional investors trade Bitcoin and Ether from existing bank accounts under VARA licensing.
Standard Chartered has launched Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) trading for eligible clients in the UAE. The bank calls it a global first for Standard Chartered. It is also the first offering of its kind by an international bank in the UAE.
Licensed by Dubai’s VARA, the service starts with Professional Investor clients. Pricing includes spreads of up to 2 percent, and wider expansion is planned.
How Standard Chartered Bitcoin Trading Works
Clients trade BTC and ETH directly through their existing Standard Chartered accounts. According to the bank’s press release, they need no separate wallets or third-party platforms.
The bank runs a closed-loop model. It manages custody and settlement from end to end. Transactions execute inside its own ecosystem, which reduces exposure to third-party wallet risks.
Zodia Markets, backed by SC Ventures, supports the build. The bank’s Wealth and Retail Banking and Corporate and Investment Banking units also collaborated. Together, they combine custody, liquidity and client access in one system.
Ayesha Abbas, head of affluent and wealth solutions in the region, said the service offers a simple way to add crypto to portfolios. She said it keeps governance standards high.
Why Standard Chartered Picked the UAE for Bitcoin Trading
Rola Abu Manneh, the bank’s CEO for the UAE, Middle East and Pakistan, called the country a natural choice. She pointed to its strong regulatory environment and forward-looking approach to innovation.
The UAE is also one of the bank’s four global wealth hubs, she added. That makes the launch strategic as well as symbolic.
Demand plays a role too. The bank says greater regulatory clarity and growing institutional adoption are drawing affluent and high-net-worth investors toward digital assets.
Samir Subberwal, the bank’s global head of wealth solutions, said clients want more than access. They want the security and trust of a regulated institution.

What Standard Chartered Bitcoin Trading Means for Investors
For eligible clients, the appeal is structure. Crypto sits beside existing holdings, inside a regulated bank, without a separate exchange account.
The product also extends what the bank already offers. Clients can buy crypto ETFs through its cash equities platform. Eligible clients can also gain exposure through structured products and OTC derivatives.
Costs and access deserve attention. Spreads of up to 2 percent will matter to active traders. Access is limited to Professional Investor clients in the UAE for now.
