Wireless carrier Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) and telecom vendor Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) have completed what they cite as the world’s first outdoor pre-standard 6G field call in the 7 GHz spectrum band. The milestone was officially announced on October 15.
The test took place at a Verizon commercial network site in Concord, California, taking early-stage 6G proof-of-concept technology out of controlled laboratory environments and placing it into real-world radio frequency conditions.
Verizon 6G Proof-of-Concept Runs on 400 MHz Carrier
According to the announcement, the field trial utilized Ericsson’s 6G proof-of-concept hardware running a pre-standard protocol stack over a continuous 400 MHz carrier in the 7 GHz centimeter-wave band.
The cell site base station was housed directly within a standard Verizon commercial site shelter. The mobile user equipment was placed inside a mobile test enclosure measuring approximately 12 by 8 feet. The enclosure featured diverse wall and window materials to evaluate signal loss.
The companies said further testing will examine how 6G signals travel from outdoors into buildings, including the effects of walls, windows, foliage and other obstacles. They are also evaluating coverage, throughput, latency, connection stability and other radio characteristics.
What Verizon’s 6G Roadmap Means for Subscribers & Investors
The milestone represents technical validation rather than a commercial product launch. Verizon and Ericsson still need to analyze the test results, refine the technology and align development with emerging 6G standards.
Commercial 6G deployment is generally anticipated around 2030, although standards and implementation details remain under development.
The companies point to potential future uses including AI-native network services, immersive communications, industrial automation and robotics.
Why This Matters
This trial represents a shift in 6G development from theoretical simulations to field validation. For investors and industry watchers, the test underscores long-term spectrum and infrastructure positioning for both companies without altering near-term financial metrics.
