Zcash developer Zakura has released Common, a group of cryptography and protocol libraries aimed at faster network operations. The project said the new code speeds proof generation, hashing, and verification, with its biggest stated gain appearing in mobile proof generation.
Common makes proof generation more than 14 times faster on mobile devices, according to Zakura. Desktop proof generation is more than five times faster. The changes target Zcash wallets and full nodes.
How Zcash Common Speeds Wallets and Nodes
The release also reported gains in several other technical tasks. Sinsemilla hashing is more than 21 times faster, while trial decryption is over 1.5 times faster. Zakura reported fourfold and eightfold improvements in zk-SNARK verification.

Helius CEO Mert called the work an “insane engineering feat.” He highlighted the reported 14-fold reduction in mobile proof-generation latency in a single release.
According to Zakura, in some cases, users may have to wait more than three seconds for a wallet to make transactions. Common seeks to ensure that in many instances, this will be under 200 milliseconds. These statistics apply to library efficiency and not consensus rule change.
Wallets implementing the common protocol should also become fast, according to Zakura. Full nodes that are using the libraries will be able to take advantage of fast transaction propagation and reduced orphan blocks. According to the project, the above benefits will be applicable to the wallets and full nodes developed with the code.
According to Sean Bowe, the co-founder of the project, the update brings significant performance benefits for shielded wallets and full nodes. Applications using Common get to enjoy the performance boost.
Common is open-source software. It can be integrated into Zakura releases and compatible wallets. The above approach enables performance optimization without a network change.
Zcash Common Requires No Network Upgrade
Common does not involve an upgrade to the Zcash network. It does not alter the protocol’s rules. The update involves upgrading libraries used by developers to create apps and full nodes.
The publication of the code does not entail automatic updating of existing wallets and nodes. The providers and operators need to integrate the code in their respective releases, after which the benefits claimed become accessible via those updated software.
Zakura’s announcement touched on transaction creation, synchronization, and networking. There was no announced update of monetary policy, shielded transaction rules, or consensus rules.
The update was timed when there was increased market activity for ZEC, Zcash’s native token. ZEC appreciated by 5% and was being traded around $833 following the announcement.

The update is concerned with improving performance. The benchmark results include proof generation, hashing, decryption, and verification processes. Adoption by wallets and nodes depends on it.
