Key Insights

  • SpaceX stock (SPCX) price briefly crossed $135 before giving back its early Monday gain.
  • The August 6 unlock released 911.5 million shares without broad insider selling.
  • Retail sold $4.5 million net, while ARK added 114,815 SPCX shares.

The SpaceX stock price briefly moved above its $135 IPO price on Monday before losing momentum during early trading. SPCX stock reached $136.19 after opening strongly, then slipped back toward the offering level. The move followed a nearly 23% weekly rally and Friday’s 16% advance.

Investors had feared heavy insider sales after 911.5 million shares became tradable on August 6. Those sales did not appear at scale, helping the stock recover from its August low. However, retail traders turned net sellers for the first time since the June listing. Their shift adds pressure around a price closely watched by recent buyers and IPO participants.

SpaceX Stock Retests the $135 IPO Price After Rebound

SpaceX stock returned above $135 for the first time since mid-July. MarketWatch data shows the shares at $135.70 during Monday morning trade, representing a gain of about 2%. The advance briefly restored the company’s offering price after almost one month below that mark.

The SpaceX stock reached an early high of $136.19 before the shares reversed. SPCX stock later moved around $135 as buyers and sellers contested the IPO level. SpaceX stock entered Monday after gaining about 22% across the previous two sessions.

The SpaceX stock recovery follows a sharp reversal from SpaceX’s June peak. Shares reached $225.64 on June 16, representing a 67% premium over the offering price. They later fell to a record low of $104.83 on August 3. Even at Monday’s early high, the stock traded around 40% below its June record.

SpaceX opened at $150 on June 12 and closed its first session at $160.95. Monday’s rebound has not reclaimed either benchmark.

Share Unlock Expands Liquidity Across the SPCX Stock Market

More than 911.5 million insider-held shares became eligible for trading on August 6. Traders had expected the release to create substantial selling pressure. Instead, SpaceX stock rose after the unlock and surged nearly 16% on Friday.

According to Reuters, the number of shares available for public trading more than doubled after the restriction expired. The larger float improved trading liquidity after the IPO started with limited publicly available shares.

The expanded float is above 1.5 billion shares. Only about 5% of the company’s shares had traded freely before the unlock.

The unlock followed SpaceX’s first quarterly report as a listed company. SpaceX reported second-quarter revenue of $7.8 billion, up 92% from the previous year. Its net loss narrowed to $541 million, while adjusted EBITDA reached $3.5 billion.

However, investors focused on $18.4 billion in capital expenditure, including extensive artificial intelligence spending. That concern helped push SPCX stock down 13.6% on August 5. Buyers returned as the unlock passed without widespread insider selling.

SpaceX Stock Price Faces Fresh Retail Selling Near $135

The SpaceX stock price recovery coincided with a change in individual investor activity. Vanda Research data put retail net sales at $4.5 million on August 7. That marked their first net selling session since SpaceX listed on June 12.

Retail investors had supported the stock throughout its post-IPO decline. Their largest single-day net purchase reached $144.6 million on June 16. Vanda estimates place the average retail purchase price near $147, still above Monday’s trading range.

eToro analyst Sam North linked Friday’s change to profit-taking, investor fatigue, and a reassessment of risk. The selling occurred as shares rebounded toward the IPO price rather than during the earlier decline.

Meanwhile, Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest added 114,815 shares to its ARK Innovation ETF on Friday. The purchase carried an estimated value of $15.28 million at the $133.11 closing price. SpaceX now represents 5.87% of ARKK and ranks as the fund’s second-largest holding.
