Bithumb has won in both lawsuits that have been instituted against some of its users for selling Bitcoin that had been wrongly sent to them. Bithumb has been trying to get the proceeds of the sales made from the two transactions.

According to reports by Chosun Biz, the Seoul Central District Court found in favor of Bithumb on both Wednesday and Thursday. This is just two out of four cases that have been filed against customers who were sent some Bitcoins wrongly and then sold some of them.

The Thursday case was for a claim of 194 million won, which is equivalent to roughly $140,000. The Wednesday judgment was in a smaller case that was worth 5 million won, roughly equal to $3,600. There are also two other unresolved cases. These claims are worth an estimated 14.8 million won ($10,700) and 500 million won ($362,000).

It appears the defendants in these two cases were served by public announcement because court papers could not be served normally.

Bithumb Seeks Money From Bitcoin Sales

The lawsuits have been related to an enormous accounting error that happened during a promotion event held by Bithumb on February 6, 2026. Bithumb was supposed to distribute rewards totaling 620,000 won to 249 users.

But as per reports, an employee mistakenly chose Bitcoin as the reward instead of Korean won as the monetary unit, leading to the distribution of 620,000 BTCs in the accounts of the customers.

Subsequently, Bithumb revealed that it had managed to retrieve 618,212 BTC, which amounted to 99.7% of the total BTC that was mistakenly transferred. However, before Bithumb froze the accounts in question, some individuals had sold 1,788 BTC.

Rather than asking its clients to pay back their wrongly received Bitcoin, Bithumb decided to file four cases of unjust enrichment in March.

Regulator Reviews Bithumb Error

The scandal has also drawn attention from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) of South Korea. It analyzed how Bithumb could allocate bitcoin to its users, which was not owned by the exchange.

At the beginning of August, the FSS sent the company a statement of inspection, initiating the process leading to sanctions against the exchange. No decision regarding the penalties has been made yet.

Further, the exchange faces some other legal problems. The police raided its offices in June due to another investigation related to hiring preferences made by the legislator Kim Byung-ki.

The exchange is also contesting a six-month ban on its business due to Anti-Money Laundering law violations. The Seoul court suspended this decision in April.

The court’s most recent decisions of the court are giving the exchange a crucial breakthrough in its process of recovering funds connected to the February problem with Bitcoin crediting.
