Google DeepMind partners with Fenris Creations to advance AI agents in persistent game worlds like EVE Online, pushing gaming and AI boundaries.
Google DeepMind is doubling down on its gaming roots, announcing a significant partnership with Fenris Creations, the studio behind the massively multiplayer online game EVE Online. The collaboration aims to test and develop generalist AI agents, like DeepMind’s Scalable Instructable Multiworld Agent (SIMA 2), in complex, persistent game worlds, according to an official blog post published on August 21, 2026.
Games have long served as a proving ground for artificial intelligence. DeepMind’s foundational research began with training neural networks to play Atari games and later escalated to the historic AlphaGo victory over world champion Lee Sedol in 2016. Now, the focus has shifted from mastering games to understanding them, with AI agents designed to interact with virtual worlds like a human player would—using natural language, keyboard controls, and visual cues rather than custom-built APIs or hardcoded rules.
