Is the AI Server Boom Losing Its Momentum?

Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) shares plunged 11.4% on Wednesday after Barclays downgraded the stock, raising concerns about enterprise AI spending and the sustainability of hardware revenue growth. The sell-off extended across AI infrastructure stocks as hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data heightened concerns about borrowing costs.

Despite strong demand for AI servers, investors are reassessing valuations and questioning whether corporate spending can sustain the growth expectations built into hardware companies’ shares.

Barclays Downgrade Puts AI Demand Under Scrutiny

Barclays analyst Tim Long lowered Dell’s rating from Overweight to Equal Weight and cut its price target to $574 from $603. The move reflected concerns that enterprise AI spending may not be accelerating quickly enough to support further gains in hardware stocks.

The analyst also highlighted the influence of rising memory prices on hardware revenue. Higher component costs can lift reported sales, but they do not necessarily indicate stronger demand for server units or improved profitability.

Are Memory Costs Masking Slower Growth?

The central question for Dell is whether its revenue growth reflects sustained demand for AI infrastructure or the impact of rising component prices. Memory costs have increased across the hardware industry, supporting revenue but potentially complicating margin performance. If prices normalize while enterprise AI adoption remains slower than expected, revenue growth could weaken.

That risk does not mean the AI boom is ending. Rather, investors want clearer evidence that businesses are expanding AI deployments at a pace that supports current growth expectations.

Broader market conditions have added to the pressure. Hotter inflation has renewed concerns about interest rates, potentially increasing financing costs for companies building data centers and expanding AI computing capacity.

Dell’s $95 Billion AI Backlog Offers Support

Dell’s latest financial results provide evidence that demand remains substantial. The company reported $47 billion in revenue for its second quarter of fiscal 2027, up 58% year over year, while its Infrastructure Solutions Group generated $31.8 billion in revenue, an 89% annual increase.

Dell also reported $60.9 billion in AI orders, $16.4 billion in AI-optimized server revenue and a record $95 billion AI backlog. The company raised its full-year fiscal 2027 revenue outlook to $192 billion. These figures underline Dell’s position in the AI infrastructure market, where cloud providers and businesses continue investing in systems to train and run AI models.

However, backlog growth alone does not guarantee higher profits. Delivery timelines, component costs, pricing pressure and customer spending plans will determine how much of that demand translates into sustainable earnings and cash flow.

Dell Stock Price Analysis: What’s Next?

Dell shares fell 11.27% to $507.93, bringing the stock close to the lower boundary of a rising parallel channel that has guided its rally since midyear. The sharp decline has weakened the bullish structure, with the next sessions likely to determine whether buyers can defend trendline support or selling pressure deepens.

The $460–$465 area is a potential downside reference if the channel breaks, while a recovery above $530–$545 could signal improving momentum. The relative strength index has turned lower but does not appear deeply oversold, leaving room for further weakness. A sustained rebound would need to reclaim nearby resistance, while a confirmed channel breakdown could expose Dell to a broader correction.
