LeBron James has signed an endorsement deal with prediction market platform Polymarket worth $15 million per year, according to Front Office Sports. That is nearly four times the $3.9 million he will earn from the Philadelphia 76ers this season.

James signed a two-year, $8 million contract with Philadelphia this summer. The Polymarket deal will have him appearing in social media posts and other content. He does not hold an ownership stake in the company.

James will promote football markets, not basketball. Derek Jeter and Eli Manning also have deals with Polymarket and appeared alongside James in a recent commercial.

Prediction Markets Are Moving Deep Into Sports

Polymarket and rival platform Kalshi have both signed partnerships with the NHL. MLB named Polymarket its exclusive prediction market partner and recognizes Kalshi under its integrity framework. The NBA is reportedly nearing agreements, while the NFL has not yet signed on.

Prediction markets work differently from traditional sportsbooks. Users buy and sell contracts based on whether specific events will happen. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission regulates them at the federal level, while sportsbooks fall under state rules. That difference has led to legal disputes over who should oversee sports-event contracts.

Giannis Antetokounmpo has an investment stake in Kalshi, announced one day after the 2026 trade deadline. Kalshi had taken close to $25 million in wagers on Giannis’ next team before that deadline. No one has accused Antetokounmpo of sharing inside information.

Polymarket took more than $43 million in contracts on where James would sign during his free agency. James is now promoting that same platform.

Inside Information Concerns Have Already Reached the Courts

In April, former NBA player Damon Jones pleaded guilty to selling nonpublic information to sports bettors. That information involved James’ injury status before a 2023 game. James was not accused of any wrongdoing.

That same month, the NBA asked the CFTC for stricter oversight of sports prediction markets. The league pointed specifically to markets around injuries, officiating, discipline and player transactions, areas where league insiders often have early access to information.

James is worth an estimated $1.4 billion, according to Forbes. He has earned close to $600 million in NBA salary and holds a lifetime Nike contract reportedly worth between $30 and $40 million per year. Nobody has suggested the Polymarket deal breaks any rules.

NBA reporter Brett Siegel noted the deal appears to comply with current league rules but raised questions about whether similar arrangements could eventually create salary cap concerns. James took a pay cut to join Philadelphia, giving the team more roster flexibility. An outside company is now paying him nearly four times that salary.

The NBA ruled against the Clippers after finding they used no-show endorsement deals to pay Kawhi Leonard beyond what the collective bargaining agreement allowed. No such claim has been made about James.

The NBA currently does not ban partnerships with prediction platforms. Players cannot hold more than a one percent investment stake in prediction market or gambling companies, per commissioner Adam Silver.

The deal is legal. The questions it raises are not going away.
