NVIDIA’s Jetson Orin Nano 2 promises 2x AI performance for robotics, drones, and vision systems, targeting millions of developers.
NVIDIA has announced the Jetson Orin Nano 2, a compact robotics computer designed to transform entry-level edge AI development. The new device doubles the inference performance of its predecessor while consuming 40% less power, positioning it as a game-changer for millions of developers building robots, drones, and vision systems.
The Jetson Orin Nano 2 boasts 78 trillion operations per second (TOPS) of AI compute, an 8-core Arm CPU, and 8GB of memory, all within the same compact form factor as the original Orin Nano. According to NVIDIA, the device is optimized for cutting-edge generative AI models and large language models (LLMs) tailored for resource-constrained edge devices. This includes compatibility with NVIDIA’s open AI ecosystem, enabling developers to deploy advanced applications in real-time perception, interaction, and navigation.
Deepu Talla, NVIDIA’s VP of Robotics and Edge AI, emphasized the leap in capability: “The Jetson Orin Nano 2 delivers the performance and energy efficiency needed for real-time reasoning at the edge, putting small yet powerful AI solutions within reach of millions of developers.”
Breaking Down the Performance Gains
Relative to the previous Orin Nano, the Jetson Orin Nano 2 offers a 2x improvement in AI inference performance, bolstered by enhanced Tensor Cores and upgraded memory bandwidth. This higher efficiency is achieved with a 15-watt power mode, which consumes 40% less energy than its predecessor at equivalent performance levels. This makes the Orin Nano 2 particularly appealing for energy-sensitive applications like autonomous drones and compact robots.
Notably, this launch builds on NVIDIA’s December 2024 release of the Jetson Orin Nano Super, which introduced a 1.7x boost in generative AI performance and reduced the entry-level price for the Orin Nano series to $249. With the Orin Nano 2, NVIDIA aims to further solidify its dominance in the edge AI and robotics markets, where demand for smaller, more efficient hardware continues to rise.
Adoption Across Industries
NVIDIA’s robotics platform already supports more than three million developers globally, and the Jetson Orin Nano 2 has garnered early interest from key players. Wing, Alphabet’s drone delivery subsidiary, plans to evaluate the Orin Nano 2 for its fleet, citing its potential to improve real-time AI perception and decision-making. Matic Robotics, a home robotics company, is integrating the device into cleaning robots to enable gesture detection, conversational AI, and precision mapping.
“With Jetson Orin Nano 2, Matic can run state-of-the-art AI models at the edge, bringing advanced perception and navigation capabilities to home robotics,” said Navneet Dalal, CEO of Matic Robotics.
Availability and Ecosystem Expansion
The Jetson Orin Nano 2 module and developer kit are slated for release in the first half of 2027. NVIDIA’s ecosystem partners, including Cognex, AAEON, and ADLINK, are already developing carrier boards, hardware systems, and reference solutions to accelerate time-to-market for customers.
Priced at $249, the Orin Nano series offers a cost-effective entry point for robotics and edge AI developers. Positioned below the higher-end Jetson AGX Orin, the Orin Nano 2 retains the small form factor of earlier Jetson models while delivering substantial performance gains. For developers and companies looking to harness AI at the edge, this latest offering from NVIDIA could be a pivotal tool.
